The NBIAM followed the guidelines provided by the WFCC and WHO to develop their laboratory and for the research work. All the safety procedures of microorganism handling described in the WHO Biosafey Manual for Laboratories are in practice in the NBAIM laboratories. The Import, export and transport of microorganisms and their risk assessment is according to the Acts and Rules of Govt. of India (Rules for the manufacture, use, import, export & storage of hazardous micro organisms, genetically engineered organisms or cells, 1989).
